Lifesaving trip to Woolworths

Meet Daniel, the 2017 Woolworths Regional Wall Token Campaign Ambassador for Townsville, North Queensland.

Daniel was complaining of a sore tooth in his lower jaw, thinking it was his wisdom tooth coming through. But his mum didn’t think this could be right, given Daniel was only eleven years old.

Daniel was out riding his bike and when he took his helmet off, his older brother noticed that his left jaw was swollen. His mum could feel a sizeable lump on the side of his cheek and booked him into the doctors the next day.

A series of x-rays and tests were performed, and a week later, Daniel was told he needed to go to Brisbane immediately for further tests. When Daniel arrived in Brisbane and underwent further tests, the lump on his jaw had grown to the size of a golf ball.

Daniel was diagnosed with bone cancer in his jaw, called Ewing’s Sarcoma. Daniel needed six rounds of intense chemotherapy to reduce the size of the tumour in his jaw before surgery.

The surgery involved removing his fibula in his left leg (he wanted to keep his right leg in tact to be able to kick the soccer ball). Surgeons broke the fibula in three parts so it could be used to replace the cancerous bone in his jaw. Daniel also had some teeth removed, and underwent a skin graft from his thigh, which was placed inside his mouth to replace some of the skin loss.

What followed was physiotherapy on his leg and jaw, and then eleven intensive rounds of chemotherapy. Daniel went from being a very active, eleven-year-old boy who loved riding his bike, playing soccer and going to see his favourite football team The North Queensland Cowboys - to a boy confined to his bed, too sick and lethargic to do anything.

Daniel still requires physio on his jaw to assist with talking and eating and will continue with ongoing blood checkups to make sure the cancer hasn’t returned.
